Natural body wash

Choosing a natural body wash can be easier said than done, though. After all, there are so many varieties, options, mixtures, and formulas out there. How do you know which one’s right for you?

In this post, we’ll answer a few common questions about natural body wash, and help you learn everything you need to know about this shower staple.

Let’s dive in.

What is natural body wash?

“Natural” isn’t a designation (like “non-GMO” or “organic”) that can be confirmed or certified by the government.

Instead, it’s a category of body wash and personal care products that are made with natural ingredients like honey and essential oils, and don’t contain toxic ingredients, which we’ll discuss more in a minute.

Most natural body washes are also made with sustainable ingredients and packed in eco-friendly materials. Natural body washes don’t contain harsh ingredients like foaming agents, parabens, artificial ingredients, or phthalates. Instead, they cleanse the skin without stripping it of natural oils.

While oil-free skin may sound like a good thing, harsh body washes that remove the skin’s protective oil barrier actually cause the skin to kick oil production into overdrive. The result is oily, poorly-balanced skin that’ smore prone to breakouts and other issues.

Are natural body washes better?

What makes natural body washes unique is what theydon’t contain. Unlike a traditional body wash you’d buy at a drugstore, natural body washes are nicer to skin thanks to their gentle surfactants and plant-based ingredients. Depending on your preferences, you can find natural body washes that contain soothing ingredients likelemongrass, spearmint, or evengrapefruit

Since natural body wash doesn’t contain harsh chemicals and additives, it also tends to be better for the environment. As if that weren’t enough, most natural body washes aren't tested on animals (which we can’t say for traditional body washes), so you can rest assured your new natural body wash is cruelty-free as well.

What ingredients make a great body wash?

No two natural body washes are created the same, and there’s no one-size-fits-all rule for which ingredients are a “must-have.” According toEveryday Health, these ingredients can help condition and protect skin:

  • Aloe Vera
  • Coconut oil
  • Vitamin E
  • Tea tree
  • Sea salt
  • Olive oil
  • Green tea

Depending on your preferences, you can also seek out a natural body wash that contains essential oils you like. Lemongrass oil  (like you’ll find in ourlemongrass body wash) is a natural astringent, for example, and can be helpful for breakout-prone skin.

If you have sensitive skin, look for a gentle body wash formulated with lavender essential oil, honey, and aloe. Ourlavender body wash is an excellent choice!

What ingredients are bad in body wash?

The cosmetics industry has its fair share of dirty secrets. Namely–many of the industry’s most relied-upon products can harm the health of consumers. Chemicals like parabens, for example, are easily absorbed by the human body. According to a2019 study, parabens  can disrupt endocrine activity. They’re also known carcinogens with connections to infertility and psychological and ecological disruptions.

With that in mind, it’s important to avoid certain common chemicals in body wash and other products. According to theEnvironmental Working Group, these are the ingredients you should steer clear of:

  • Sodium lauryl sulfate. If you have sensitive skin, sulfates will strip and damage the outer layer, resulting in irritation and rashes.
  • Parabens. Parabens are damaging to the endocrine system and have been shown to disrupt hormone function.
  • Polyethylene/PEGs. If you have dry skin, avoid these at all costs. The ingredient will damage the skin’s natural moisture barrier and leave it vulnerable to damage and bacterial infection.

Making the Switch to Natural Body Wash

Self-care doesn’t have to be a big process. In fact, many of the most important self-care steps are easy to enact, adn good for everyone around you, as well.

If you’re looking for a way to take better care of your skin and the environment, switching to natural body wash is an easy, straightforward option. By getting rid of toxic ingredients and additives and focusing on eco-friendly packaging, natural body wash reduces waste, cuts chemicals, and just makes your house (and shower) a nicer place to be. Plus, it can help those with sensitive skin avoid all manner of common skin woes, like breakouts, dryness, redness, and more.
