Tea Tree Oil (Melaleuca alternifolia) is said to have been discovered by British sailors proximate to Sydney, Australia, in the year 1770. It is distilled from the Melaleuca tree, an exotic plant species with a wide, white-colored trunk ensconced by paper-like bark. This moderate-sized tree’s leaves are thin and elliptical in shape. It is said to by a member of the Eucalyptus family and sometimes referred to as a ‘punk tree.’ Tea Tree Essential Oil contains antiseptic, antibacterial and antifungal properties which make it an ideal natural solution for battling a mélange of skin conditions. Due to its antimicrobial components, Tea Tree Oil is believed to be efficacious in killing the bacteria known for causing acne. Using tea tree oil in conjunction with other natural creams, or dispensing a few drops into a temperate bath, have been noted to sooth symptoms of eczema and psoriasis plagued skin. The essential oil is thought to work by absorbing into underlying layers of skin, to kill infections like athlete’s foot, where they dwell.
