Benzoic Acid is often used as a less-toxic preservative in deodorants, mouthwashes and body creams. It exists naturally in many plants and can be used in foods. It is considered a low to moderate health risk, however it has no toxic effect on organs and is considered a low priority for safety review by the Environmental Working Group (EWG). Benzoic acid can also be used to hinder the growth of bacteria known for causing infection, according to Everyday Health magazine. It has also been known to reduce redness and irritation associated with burns and bug bites.
